Laser Hair Removal: How to Prepare for Your Appointment

How Laser Hair Removal Works, Briefly

Laser hair removal uses a medical-grade laser calibrated to your skin type. The laser energy is absorbed by pigment in the hair follicle, which weakens the follicle over successive treatments.

Because hair grows in cycles, not all follicles are active at the same time — which is why a course of treatments, rather than a single session, is required. Hair reduction is typically noticeable from the third treatment, with optimal results from six to ten sessions spaced six to eight weeks apart.

Why Preparation Matters

Good preparation is not a formality. It affects:

  • Safety — active tan, certain medications and some skin conditions increase the risk of burns or pigmentation changes
  • Effectiveness — the laser needs pigment in the follicle, so waxing or plucking between sessions works against you
  • Comfort — well-prepared skin responds more comfortably

Four to Six Weeks Before

  • Stop waxing, plucking, threading and epilating the treatment area. Shaving is fine and encouraged — it does not disturb the follicle
  • Limit sun exposure and avoid solariums and fake tan on the area. Tanned skin is treated with more caution and may need to be postponed
  • Disclose your medications — some medications cause photosensitivity, and Roaccutane use in the previous six months affects suitability
  • Tell us about pregnancy or breastfeeding, and any hormonal conditions, as these affect treatment planning
  • Attend a consultation and patch test so your practitioner can assess your skin type and calibrate the device

24 to 48 Hours Before

  • Shave the area — clean shaving the day before is usually ideal
  • No fake tan, no tinted moisturiser and no sun exposure on the area
  • Avoid strong exfoliants and actives on the treatment area, as your practitioner advises
  • Avoid alcohol if you find treatments less comfortable, and sleep well
  • Arrive with clean, product-free skin on the day

On the Day

  • No makeup, deodorant, perfume or body lotion on the treatment area
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the area
  • Let your practitioner know if you are feeling unwell, or if the area is irritated or sunburned
  • Remove jewellery from the area if relevant

During Your Appointment

Your practitioner will confirm your skin type and settings, provide protective eye shields for everyone in the room, and apply cooling to the area. Most people describe the sensation as a brief snap or a warm prickling. Your practitioner works methodically through the area and will talk you through each stage.

Aftercare

Aftercare is simple and mostly about protecting the skin:

  • Cool the area with a cool pack if it feels warm, and avoid scratching
  • Use SPF 50+ daily on exposed treated areas
  • Avoid heat — saunas, steam rooms, hot baths and intense exercise — for 24 to 48 hours
  • Use a gentle cleanser and moisturiser; avoid strong actives and exfoliants for a few days
  • Do not pluck, wax or thread between sessions — shaving is fine
  • Contact the clinic if you notice blistering, persistent redness or unusual pigmentation changes

Between Sessions

Hair that continues to grow between appointments will often be finer and slower to return. Shaving between sessions does not affect your results, while plucking or waxing can. If you are planning a holiday, a special event or another facial treatment, mention it at your appointment so your schedule can be planned around sun exposure and other treatments.
