Body Cavitation: What It Is and What to Expect

What Cavitation Is

Cavitation is a non-invasive body contouring treatment that uses low-frequency ultrasound energy to target localised pockets of stubborn fat. It is one of the most widely used technologies in non-surgical body shaping, and it requires no needles, no incisions and no downtime.

It is important to be clear from the outset about what cavitation is for. It is a treatment for localised, stubborn areas — not a weight-loss treatment, and not a substitute for a healthy diet and regular movement.

How Cavitation Works

  1. A conductive gel is applied to the treatment area
  2. A handpiece is moved in measured passes over the area
  3. Low-frequency ultrasound creates micro-bubbles within the fatty tissue
  4. The fat cell membranes are disrupted, and the contents are cleared through the body's natural pathways over the following days and weeks

The sensation is usually described as a warm, humming or buzzing feeling. It is not painful, and most clients find it comfortable.

Cavitation is frequently combined with EMS (electrical muscle stimulation) in the same session: cavitation addresses localised fat while EMS stimulates muscle contractions to support tone and definition in the same area.

What It Is Not

  • It is not weight loss — it will not replace the need for a calorie-appropriate diet and regular activity
  • It is not liposuction — it does not remove large volumes of fat
  • It is not permanent without maintenance — lifestyle factors continue to influence results
  • It is not suitable for everyone — assessment matters

What Cavitation May Help With

  • Localised stubborn fat pockets
  • Areas that have been resistant to diet and exercise
  • Contour and silhouette definition
  • Commonly treated areas: abdomen, flanks, thighs, arms and the bra line

Who May Consider It

  • Clients close to their goal shape, with specific stubborn areas
  • Anyone wanting a non-surgical, no-downtime approach to body shaping
  • Clients who are already exercising and eating reasonably well and want to refine contour
  • Those wanting to combine fat reduction with muscle toning in one treatment

Who It May Not Suit

Cavitation is not appropriate during pregnancy, with a pacemaker or other implanted electronic device, or with metal implants in the treatment area. It is also generally avoided with liver or kidney conditions, and during cancer or active cancer treatment. Your practitioner will take a full history at consultation.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

Your practitioner will first assess the area and discuss your goals, then apply conductive gel and work the handpiece over the treatment area in a methodical pattern. Sessions are calm and comfortable, and you can resume your day immediately afterwards.

A course is usually required. For fat-focused treatment, six to eight sessions spaced twice weekly is typical; when combined with EMS, four to six weekly sessions is common. Measurable smoothing is often noticed from around the third session within a course.

Realistic expectations: individual responses vary. Results build gradually across a course, and outcomes cannot be guaranteed.

Aftercare and Lifestyle Support

The treatment supports your body's natural clearing processes, so what you do afterwards matters:

  • Stay well hydrated — water supports lymphatic clearance
  • Keep moving — light activity helps circulation and lymph flow
  • Eat well — adequate protein and a balanced diet support results
  • Sleep — recovery and repair happen overnight
  • Consider our Detox+ reset between treatment sessions if your practitioner recommends it

Our article on how lifestyle impacts your body contouring results explains these factors in more detail, and can fat cells really be reduced without surgery? covers how the technology works at a cellular level.
