Skin Needling for Acne Scarring: How Collagen Induction Therapy Works

What Is Skin Needling?
Skin needling, also known as collagen induction therapy (CIT) or microneedling, is a clinical treatment that uses a sterile, single-use needling device to create precise micro-channels in the skin. These controlled micro-injuries trigger your body's natural healing response, stimulating new collagen and elastin production.
As collagen matures over the following weeks, the skin becomes smoother, firmer and more even — making it particularly effective for acne scarring.
How Skin Needling Helps Acne Scarring
Acne scars form when deep inflammation damages the skin's collagen structure, leaving behind indentations (atrophic scars), raised areas (hypertrophic scars) or dark marks (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation).
Skin needling addresses acne scarring by:
- Stimulating collagen production — new collagen fills in atrophic (pitted) scars from within
- Refining skin texture — the micro-channels trigger skin renewal, smoothing roughness
- Reducing post-acne marks — improved cell turnover helps fade pigmentation
- Enhancing serum absorption — corrective serums penetrate deeper through the micro-channels
What to Expect During Treatment
- Consultation and assessment — your practitioner assesses your skin and scarring
- Numbing — a medical-grade numbing cream is applied for 20–30 minutes
- Treatment — a sterile, single-use needling device is passed over the area
- Serum infusion — corrective serums are infused through the micro-channels
- Recovery mask — a calming mask finishes the session
The treatment takes about 1 hour including numbing. There is no significant downtime — mild redness and warmth (similar to a mild sunflush) typically resolve within 24–72 hours.
How Many Sessions Will I Need?
Most clients see best results after a course of 3–6 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart. Improvement builds over 4–6 weeks as collagen matures, with optimal results visible a few months after the final session.
Is Skin Needling Right for Your Acne Scarring?
Skin needling is suitable for most skin types and tones. It is most effective for:
- Atrophic (pitted) acne scars
- Enlarged pores
- Rough or uneven texture
- Post-acne marks
- Mild pigmentation
It is not suitable if you have active acne or open lesions in the treatment area, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have used Roaccutane in the previous 6 months.
